If you’re heading to Dubai this summer and want some tips on how to cope with the heat, you’re in the right place! We’re here with tips on what to wear, what to do and how to protect your eyes and skin, so you can make the most of your trip without the heat preventing you from doing anything. With temperatures averaging 40 degrees in the summer, you need to prepare yourself!
Firstly, when you’re planning out your trip, make sure that you’re breaking up your day with indoor activities as well. If you were to plan back-to-back activities outside, you’re going to struggle. So, make sure that you’re planning it out carefully. For example, if you’re going to do a trip in the desert, perhaps plan this for the early evening, you could do an outdoor activity in the morning like sunrise yoga, then spend some time in a spa in the daytime. If you’re going to be out in the sun over the peak periods of heat like a pool party, go for brunch indoors in the morning and then plan something indoors later in the day.
When you get to Dubai and experience the heat, it can be very tempting to make the air conditioning ice cold. However, when you’re cool in the hotel room and then step outside, it’s going to be even more difficult for your body to adjust. So, try to keep your hotel room at a cool temperature but not freezing, as it’ll help your body throughout the day.
If you know you’re going to struggle in 40+ degree heat and don’t think you’ll make the most of being in Dubai, we’d recommend that you consider visiting outside of the summer, which would be between October and May. You will still experience temperatures of 25-30 degrees in these months, potentially hotter in October and May when it’s closest to summer, but it’s just that bit more comfortable.
You also need to think about what you’re packing. It can be tempting to wear shorts and a T-shirt, however, you should wear lightweight clothes like cotton, as well as cover your skin where you can. Exposing your skin completely to the elements, even with suncream on, can be dangerous. So, you need to be careful and make sure that you pack appropriately to stay cool and comfortable. Also, when you’re sweating a lot, you need to make sure any jewellery you take is tarnish-free, so look for gold-plated Arabic jewellery or sterling silver to keep it in the best condition.
Hopefully, this goes without saying, but you need to pack SPF 50. Anything less simply won’t protect your skin, so it’s really important. The UV index is particularly strong in the summer so you need to be really careful. You’ll also need to get 100% UV protection sunglasses!
Last but not least, you need to stay hydrated. You should be drinking 3-4 litres a day just on average, with even more if you’re exercising at all, because your body is going to sweat and you will lose quite a lot of water which can cause many different types of issues. Make sure that you’re drinking this throughout the day rather than in large amounts as this can also cause issues. Eating water-rich foods like tomatoes, cucumber or watermelon can also really help.
